In the past 15 years Bega Valley Shire Council have embarked on the development and implementation of formal Estuary Management Plans for a number of the Shire’s more significant estuaries including Wallaga Lake, Bega River, Merimbula and Back Lakes, Pambula Lake, Lake Curalo and Wonboyn Lake. In 2016 Council has initiated new projects to:
-
Develop a new Coastal Management Program for the Bermagui River estuary
-
Review existing Management Plans and develop new Coastal Management Programs for the Wallaga Lake, Merimbula Lake, Back Lake, and Lake Curalo estuaries
These projects will run throughout 2017, and when complete, the Coastal Management Programs will provide planning direction for these estuaries over the coming decade, consistent with the reformed coastal management framework in NSW. The aims of the new Coastal Management Programs for our esturaries include:
-
Providing an update to our understanding of the estuary processes
-
Considering how best to tackle the threats and pressures on our estuaries, and to protect and enhance their natural environment
-
Working with the community to find new opportunities for further improving the recreational amenity of our estuaries
Information about the Coastal Management Programs for each estuary can be found in the links below.
